The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 So he did not quickly enter the steep valley. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
