Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
