In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enwrapped! 1 rise (to pray) the night except a little; 2 For half the night, or reduce some from it. 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). 5 Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the Name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 food that chokes and painful punishment 13 On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 Surely We have sent to you an Apostle, a witness against you, as We sent an apostle to Firon. 15 But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 The heaven shall rend asunder thereby; His promise is ever brought to fulfillment. 18 Surely this is a reminder, then let him, who will take the way to his Lord. 19
