The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
