He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind came to him. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 you attend to him, 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 So let him who pleases mind it. 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 Exalted and holy, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 How We pour water in showers 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
