These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
