The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif. Lam. Ra. THESE ARE MESSAGES of revelation - of a discourse clear in itself and clearly showing the truth. 1 A time will surely come when those who are bent on denying the truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God, 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy life and let false hopes amuse them. They will soon come to know. 3 And never did We destroy a town but it had a term made known. 4 No nation can outstrip its term, nor do they put it back. 5 They say: 'Thou, upon whom the Remembrance is sent down, thou art assuredly possessed! 6 Why do you not bring down the angels, if what you say is true' 7 We do not send angels except with the truth. Then they shall have no respite. 8 It is We who sent down the Koran, and We watch over it. 9 Indeed, We sent Messengers before thee, among the factions of the ancients, 10 And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him. 11 Even so We make a way for it (that is, the Admonition) in the hearts of the culprits (like a hot rod); 12 They believe not therein, and already the example of the ancients hath gone forth. 13 And if We opened upon them a door of the heaven, and they passed the day mounting thereto. 14 yet would they say, 'Our eyes have been dazzled; nay, we are a people bewitched!' 15
