The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those that pray 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
