The Human (Al-Insan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Surely there hath come upon man a space of time when he was not a thing worth mentioning. 1 Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing. 2 We surely showed him the way that he may either be grateful or deny. 3 [Now,] behold, for those who deny the truth, We have prepared chains, iron collars and a blazing fire, but 4 [whereas,] behold, the truly virtuous shall drink from a cup flavoured with the calyx of sweet-smelling flowers: 5 A spring wherefrom the slaves of Allah will drink, causing it to gush forth abundantly. 6 They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread. 7 And feed the needy for the love of Him, and the orphans and the captives, 8 [saying, in their hearts,] "We feed you for the sake of God alone: we desire no recompense from you, nor thanks: 9 Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful." 10 But Allah will deliver them from the evil of that Day, and will shed over them a Light of Beauty and (blissful) Joy. 11 and will reward them for all their patience in adversity with a garden [of bliss] and with [garments of] silk. 12 therein they shall recline upon couches, therein they shall see neither sun nor bitter cold; 13 the shading branches of trees will come down low over them, and their clusters of fruit, will hang down where they are the easiest to reach. 14 Vessels of silver and goblets of pure crystal will be passed round among them 15 goblets bright as crystal but made of silver, filled to exact measure. 16 And they will be given to drink there a cup (of wine) mixed with Zanjabil (ginger, etc.), 17 (The water of) a spring therein, named Salsabil. 18 ۞ They will be served by immortal youths who look like scattered pearls. 19 And when you see there, you shall see blessings and a great kingdom. 20 Upon those [blest] will be garments of green silk and brocade; and they will be adorned with bracelets of silver. And their Sustainer will them to drink of a drink most pure. 21 [And it will be said], "Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your effort has been appreciated." 22
