He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 and who has fear of God, 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 In honored books, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 Noble and pious. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 Then (as for) the way-- He has made it easy (for him) 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 And olives and palms 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
