The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 Of a related orphan, 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
