The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And believes in Al-Husna. 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
