The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it very near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those that pray 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
