Now, behold, this [divine writ] has indeed been bestowed from on high by the Sustainer of all the worlds: 192 the Faithful Spirit has brought it down 193 Upon your heart that you may be of the warners 194 in clear Arabic speech. 195 This is in the Books of earlier people. 196 Is it not evidence enough for them that [so many] learned men from among the children of Israel have recognized this [as true]? 197 And had We sent it down upon a person other than an Arab, 198 So that he should have recited it to them, they would not have believed therein. 199 This is how We have made the habit of denying embedded in the hearts of the guilty. 200 they shall not believe in it until they see the painful punishment 201 So that it will come upon them suddenly, when they perceive not. 202 and they will say, 'Shall we be respited?' 203 Do they wish Us then to hasten the punishment? 204 Beholdest thou? if We let them enjoy for years. 205 and then the chastisement of which they were being warned were to come upon them, 206 What shall that which they enjoyed avail them? 207 Never did We destroy a population, but had its warners - 208 By way of admonition, and We have never been oppressors. 209 The devils did not bring it down: 210 they are not supposed to do so. Nor do have they the ability for such a task. 211 Indeed they are debarred from even hearing it. 212 So do not call any other god beside Allah lest you become of those who will be punished, 213 Warn your tribe and your near kinsmen. 214 And lower thou thy wing unto those who follow thee as believers. 215 So if they do not obey you, then say, "Indeed I am unconcerned with what you do." 216 Have trust in the Mighty, the Merciful, 217 Who seeth thee when thou standest up (to pray) 218 And thy movements among those who prostrate themselves, 219 He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. 220 Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend? 221 They descend on every forgerer steeped in sin, 222 They listen eagerly, but most of them are liars. 223 As for poets, only the wayward follow them. 224 Art thou not aware that they roam confusedly through all the valleys [of words and thoughts,] 225 and that they [so often] say what they do not do [or feel]? 226 except those who believed and acted righteously and remembered Allah much, and when they themselves were subjected to wrong, they exacted retribution no more than to the extent of the wrong? Soon will the wrong-doers know the end that they shall reach. 227
