The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the star when it plunges, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 And Manat, the other third (of the pagan deities)? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. 25
