The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
