And [every time] the great ones among his people, who refused to acknowledge the truth and gave the lie to the announcement of a life to come - [simply] because We had granted them ease and plenty in [their] worldly life, and they had become corrupted by it [every time] they would say: "This [man] is nothing hut a mortal like yourselves, eating of what you eat, and drinking of what you drink: 33 So if you follow a man like yourself you will certainly be doomed. 34 What, does he promise you that when you are dead and turned to dust and bones, you will be brought forth? 35 ۞ Away! away with that wherewith ye are promised; 36 There exists only our present life: we die and we live [but once], and shall never be raised up again. 37 He is naught but a man who has forged a lie against Allah, and we are not going to believe in him. 38 [Whereupon the prophet] would say: "O my Sustainer! Succour me against their accusation of lying!" 39 He answered: "A short while, and they shall be repenting." 40 A blast struck them for a just cause, and We made them look like withered leaves. God keeps the unjust people away from His mercy. 41 Then We raised up other generations after them, 42 Every nation has an appointed life span. 43 Then We sent Our Messengers in succession. Yet whenever its Messenger came to a nation they belied him, so We made them follow others, and We made them but as tales, so begone the nation who did not believe! 44 Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a manifest authority 45 to the Pharaoh and his nobles. But they behaved proudly and thought themselves superior people. 46 They therefore said, “Shall we believe in two humans like ourselves, whereas their nation is servile to us?” 47 So they rejected them and became of those who were destroyed. 48 for, indeed, We had vouchsafed revelation unto Moses in order that they might find the right way. 49 And We made the son of Mary and his mother a portent, and We gave them refuge on a height, a place of flocks and watersprings. 50
