The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 But We see it very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 for none may ever feel secure from the punishment of their Lord; 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
