The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 The freeing of a slave! 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
