The Ad gave the lie to the Messengers. 123 Recall, when their brother Hud said to them: "Have you no fear? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 So fear God and listen to me. 126 For this I ask of you no wage, for my wage falls only on the Lord of the Worlds. 127 Build ye on every high place a monument for vain delight? 128 And do you take to yourselves underground reservoirs, in order to live for ever! 129 and when you strike you strike like tyrants? 130 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 131 Fear Him who has bestowed on you what you know, 132 He hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 and with gardens and springs. 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day." 135 They said, 'Alike it is to us, whether thou admonishest, or art not one of the admonishers; 136 “This is nothing but the tradition of former people.” 137 And we are not to be punished." 138 In response they denied him – We therefore destroyed them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 139 Yet surely your Lord is mighty and merciful. 140
