A company of the former peoples 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
