Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And with Firaun, who used to crucify. 10 led rebellious lives, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment: 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Would that I had done some good deeds for this life". 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return thou unto thy Sustainer, well-pleased [and] pleasing [Him]: 28 Join My worshipers and 29 into My Paradise. 30
