The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 "I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you." 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 Saleh said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
