He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 But the self-sufficient, 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 and fearfully, 9 you pay him no heed. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 in [the light of His] revelations blest with dignity, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 then makes him to die, and buries him, 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 How We pour water in showers 25 and let the earth to break open 26 to yield therein corn, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 wife and sons, 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
