Those who stayed at home were glad that they were left behind by God's Messenger. They hated the thought of striving for God's cause with their possessions and their persons. They said, "Do not go forth in this heat." Say, "The Fire of Hell is far hotter." If only they could understand. 81 Therefore they shall laugh little and weep much as a recompense for what they earned. 82 If Allah brings you back to a party of them (the hypocrites), and they ask your permission to go out (to fight), say: "Never shall you go out with me, nor fight an enemy with me; you agreed to sit inactive on the first occasion, then you sit (now) with those who lag behind." 83 You shall never pray over any one of them when he is dead, nor stand over his tomb. For they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died whilst they were sinners. 84 Their wealth or children should not tempt you; God wants to punish them through these things in this life so that they will die as disbelievers. 85 And when a Surah (chapter from the Quran) is revealed, enjoining them to believe in Allah and to strive hard and fight along with His Messenger, the wealthy among them ask your leave to exempt them (from Jihad) and say, "Leave us (behind), we would be with those who sit (at home)." 86 They are well-pleased to be with those behind, and a seal has been set upon their hearts, so the they understand not. 87 But the Noble Messenger and those who accepted faith with him, fought with their wealth and lives; and for them only are the virtues (rewards); and it is they who have achieved the goal. 88 Allah hath made ready for them Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide. That is the supreme triumph. 89
