The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it sets: 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 by the lote tree beyond which none may pass 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 his eyes did not swerve, nor did they stray 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
