A multitude of those of old 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
