The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
