The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
