The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
