The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 That your endeavour is for different ends. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world -- 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
