We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible man who can hardly make his meaning clear? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 Then he incited his people and they obeyed him; verily they were ever a transgressing people. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
