The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 So did (Allah) convey the Inspiration to His slave [Muhammad SAW through Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 That were indeed an unjust division. 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
