The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER this unfolding [of God's message,] as it comes down from on high! 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 These are only names given by yourselves and your fathers. God has not given them any authority. They, (unbelievers), only follow mere conjecture and the desires of their souls, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
