a good many of olden times, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
