The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 and the day in splendour 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
