Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Kaf. Ha. Ya. A'in. Sad. 1 Commemorate the beneficence of your Lord on Zachariah, His devotee, 2 when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying, 3 saying: 'O my Lord, my bones are enfeebled, and my head glows silver with age. Yet, never Lord, have I been unblessed in prayer to You. 4 And verily I fear my kindred after me, and my wife hath been barren; so bestow on me from before Thee an heir. 5 who will be my heir as well as an heir [to the dignity] of the House of Jacob; and make him, O my Sustainer, well-pleasing to Thee!" 6 We answered his prayers with the glad news of the birth of a son by the name of John and told him, "We have never given such a name to anyone else." 7 He said, "Lord, how can I have a son? My wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age". 8 (The angel) answered: "Thus will it be. Your Lord said: 'This is easy for Me; for when I brought you into being you were nothing.' 9 He said, "My Lord, grant me a sign!" He said, "Your sign will be that you will not speak to anyone for three successive days and nights, although sound in body." 10 Thereupon he came out of the sanctuary unto his people and signified to them [by gestures]: "Extol His limitless glory by day and by night!" 11 We commanded John, Zachariah's son, to follow the guidance of the Lord with due steadfastness. We gave knowledge and wisdom to John during his childhood. 12 We gave him compassion and purity. He was a pious human being, 13 and cherishing to his parents. Never was he insolent or rebellious. 14 Peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he will die, and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
