The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 by the moon, which follows it, 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, 8 prosperous is he who purified it, 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 But they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her - whereupon their Sustainer visited them with utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike: 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
