And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers. 139 When he fled unto the laden ship, 140 and sailed away in a laden ship, wherein people cast lots. Because he lost, he was thrown into the water. 141 The fish swallowed him up and he deserved (all this). 142 And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah) 143 He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised; 144 ۞ Then We cast him on to the vacant surface of the earth while he was sick. 145 And We caused to grow over him a tree, a gourd. 146 And We sent him to a hundred thousand, rather they exceeded. 147 And they came to believe; so We allowed them to enjoy the good things of life for an age. 148 Now, ask them, has your Lord daughters, and they sons? 149 Did We create the angels females, to which they were witnesses? 150 Then is it of their lying that they say: 151 "Allah has begotten children"? but they are liars! 152 Hath He chosen daughters above sons? 153 What is the matter with you? How do you decide? 154 What, will you not remember? 155 Or have ye an authority manifest? 156 Then bring your scripture, if what you say is true. 157 They have established a kinship between Allah and the angels; and the angels know well that these people will be arraigned (as culprits). 158 (They say): “Exalted be Allah above what they attribute to Him, 159 except the servants of God, sincere and devoted. 160 So surely you and what you worship, 161 You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him 162 Except one who is (destined) to burn in Hell. 163 The angels say, "Each of us has an appointed place. 164 And verily we! we are ranged in ranks. 165 And indeed, we are those who exalt Allah." 166 They used to say before: 167 "If only we had had before us a Message from those of old, 168 We would have been the chosen servants of Allah." 169 Yet now (that it has come) they refuse to believe in it; but they will come to know soon. 170 Already has Our Word been passed before (this) to our Servants sent (by Us), 171 That they would be helped, 172 and that, verily, Our hosts - they indeed - would [in the end] be victorious! 173 Therefore turn away from them till a time, 174 and see them [for what they are]; and in time they [too] will come to see [what they do not see now]. 175 Then for Our punishment are they impatient? 176 When it lights in their courtyard, how evil will be the morning of them that are warned! 177 And turn thou aside from them for a season. 178 And wait, for they will soon see. 179 Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him) 180 Peace be with the Messengers (of God). 181 And all praise unto Allah the Lord of the worlds. 182

(1) وقف لازم، حيث يستخدم الرسم الإنجليزي نقطة وقف. (2) وقف جائز مع الوقف أولى، حيث يستخدم الرسم الإنجليزي فاصلة قد تظهر باحتمال الثلثين. (3) وقف جائز مع تساوي أولوية الوقف والوصل، حيث يستخدم الرسم الإنجليزي فاصلة قد تظهر باحتمال النصف للنصف. (4) وقف جائز مع الوصل أولى، حيث يستخدم الرسم الإنجليزي فاصلة قد تظهر باحتمال الثلث. When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
