The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 something that a very mighty one has imparted to him: 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 his eyes did not swerve, nor did they stray 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
