The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who are clothed! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons standing before him, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 frowned and scowled, 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
