Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
