Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ We tried Pharaoh's nation before them. A noble Messenger came to them, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
