The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except those who pray, 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 Are free of blame, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
