The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A caller supplicated about a punishment to fall on 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
