Jonah was certainly a Messenger. 139 When he fled unto the laden ship, 140 He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers, 141 The fish swallowed him up and he deserved (all this). 142 Had he not glorified God, 143 He would have stayed in its belly till the day the dead are raised. 144 ۞ So We cast him, sick, on a barren shore, 145 and caused a gourd tree to grow over him, 146 We sent him as a messenger to a hundred thousand people or more, 147 and they believed, and We gave them enjoyment for awhile. 148 Now, ask them, has your Lord daughters, and they sons? 149 Did We create the angels females, to which they were witnesses? 150 Pay heed! It is their slander that they say. – 151 "God has begotten [a son]"; and verily, they are lying [too, when they say,] 152 “Has he chosen daughters instead of sons?” 153 What ails you that you judge in such a wise? 154 “So do you not ponder?” 155 Or, do you have a clear authority? 156 Then bring your book, if you are truthful. 157 And they have invented a blood-relationship between Him and the Jinns: but the Jinns know (quite well) that they have indeed to appear (before his Judgment-Seat)! 158 God is too glorious for what they ascribe to Him 159 Not thus, however, [behave] God's true servants: 160 But as for you, and that you serve, 161 You cannot make anyone rebel against Him. 162 Save him who will go to hell. 163 [The angels say], "Every single one of us has his place assigned: 164 "And we are truly those who stand in rows, 165 and we glorify God". 166 And surely they used to say: 167 "If we had had with us a Book like that of the people of old, 168 Surely we would have been the bondmen of God sincere. 169 They have rejected the Quran. They will soon know the consequences (of their disbelief). 170 And verily Our word went forth of old unto Our bondmen sent (to warn) 171 That undoubtedly, only they will be helped. 172 and that, verily, Our hosts - they indeed - would [in the end] be victorious! 173 Hence, turn thou aside for a while from those [who deny the truth,] 174 And (then) see them, so they too shall see. 175 Then for Our punishment are they impatient? 176 But when it shall descend in their court, evil shall then be the morning of the warned ones. 177 So turn thou from them for a while, 178 And see thou: they themselves shall presently see. 179 Glory be to thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above that they describe! 180 And peace be upon all His message-bearers! 181 And praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. 182
