Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 Verily We have sent it down on a blessed night, verily We were to become warners. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 But they turned away from him, and said: "He is well-instructed, (but) possessed." 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
