The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ When the Terror descends 1 there will be nought that could give the lie to its having come to pass, 2 It will bring down [some] and raise up [others]. 3 When the earth is shaken with convulsion 4 The mountains bruised and crushed, 5 And become dust dispersing. 6 and you shall be three bands -- 7 Those on the Right -- how blessed are those on the Right! 8 And there shall be such as will have lost themselves in evil: oh, how [unhappy] will be they who have lost themselves in evil! 9 And the Outstrippers, the Outstrippers 10 Who will be honoured 11 in the Gardens of Delight 12 A throng of the ancients, 13 And a few of those of later time. 14 on lavish couches 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 Youths of never-ending bloom will pass round to them 17 with goblets and ewers and a cup filled with a drink drawn from a running spring, 18 Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, 19 and with fruit of any kind that they may choose, 20 Bird meats that they relish, 21 And there will be fair ones large eyed. 22 Like unto hidden pearls, 23 All this shall be theirs as a reward for their deeds. 24 Therein they hear no vain or sinful discourse. 25 only the words of peace and tranquillity. 26 The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right? 27 [They, too, will find themselves] amidst fruit laden lote-trees, 28 And clustered plantains, 29 And in everlasting shade. 30 And water everflowing. 31 and an abundance of fruits, 32 Unending, unforbidden, 33 And couches raised up. 34 We have formed them in a distinctive fashion, 35 And have made them virgins. 36 Loving companions matched in age, 37 For those on the Right Hand. 38
