The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
