[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
